Summary:
Pre-series. Sam’s first birthday away from home.

Sam’s room was hot, muggy and he was stuck in this Hell for the rest of the summer. This had been the cheapest place Sam had been able to find and it was defiantly worth the price. No air conditioning and the stink from the alley was so bad that he couldn’t open his windows. He had to share a bathroom with a floor of other people. And he was pretty sure there was a roach problem.

Unlike most of his friends, Sam wouldn’t be going home for the summer. He didn’t have a home to return to; his dad had made that pretty clear. Even if Sam wanted to and even if John would take him back, Sam didn’t have a clue where to find them. They could be in any of the lower 48. Hell, they could be anywhere between northern Canada and southern Mexico, for all Sam knew. Though probably not. Dad hated crossing the border. They asked too many nosey questions and could seem to sense that the Winchesters were not exactly on the up and up.

Sam knew he wouldn’t miss that life. Maybe his life right now wasn’t all puppies and roses but at least it was a honest life.

It wasn’t that John wasn’t a bad father. This Sam could grudgingly admit. He and his brother had always been well feed and always had someplace warm to sleep. They went to school and got in trouble for smoking and drinking before they were legal. John never hit his boys in anger and he never missed a birthday, even if sometimes it was only to call ten minutes to midnight.

It was just all of the other stuff. It was midnight training, weekend hunts and disappearing for days without notice. It was missing Sam’s plays, soccer games and graduation, for God’s sake. It was never giving him the freedom to be who he was and who he wanted to be. It was trying to keep him home. It was trying to force him to become someone he didn’t want to be.

It was in those moments, Sam hated John. He hated what John stood for and what he believed in. He hated his father’s constant quest for vengeance. And he was happy, overjoyed, that it was not longer a part of his life.

But it still hurt when John didn’t call on Sam’s birthday. He’d never missed one before.
